General Flag Information
A flag is a piece of fabric, usually rectangular in shape and decorated with designs or symbols. The earliest known flags appeared in China, where they were used to identify different divisions of armies. The Roman Empire used the vexillum, a square flag, as a symbol for its calvary. Later, as the navigation of the oceans expanded, flags were extensively used for signaling over large distances. Political powers have long used flags as a rallying symbol, and most revolutionary movements adopt their own flags right away to identify their cause. Flags are also used by private and professional organizations, and also for decorative purposes. They are now a part of everyday life around the world.
