American State Flags Knowledge Base
What are the current standards for American and State flags? I drove past San Jose's HP Pavillion this morning and realized that the US and CA flags flying out there were horribly faded. When I was a kid we put up and took down the flag every day outside the schools. Is that no longer done? What are the new accepted etiquette standards for US and State flags?
shouldn't the state flag be above the American flag? i just read something that states the founding fathers believed state before country if this is true why do we have the American flag above our state flag don't get me wrong i'm a proud amarican i love this country and what our constitution stood for
Is the American Flag displayed on the right? I am having a legislative meeting at my office and the american flag and state flag are being displayed on a table. What is the display protacol? Should the american flag be displayed to the right of the state flag or visa versa?
Is israel the 51st American State? Is Israel trying to establish a Totalitarian state? America send the state of Israel more than 300 million dollars a year, an amount that exceeds the amount of government money that is sent to some States in America. Furthermore, when ever the media talks about Israel they refer to it was "the state of Israel" and not the country of Israel, why is this? I think the star of david should be stitched to the American flag, along with the 50 other stars. Israel builds walls around the palistinian settlements, they buldoze houses, prisons, governemt buildings in Palistine, they impose curfews for palistinians, they control all building aspects and architectural aspects of Palintinian setlements, they tell Palistinians where they can go and dictate travel routs for palistinians, they kill, torture and imprison Palistinians who oppose them, Israel dictates what goes in and out of Palistine and they even close down places of worship for Palistinian people. Doesn't this sound like a totalitarianism state or rule? What do you think?
Is this proper American flag etiquette? I was at a recent event in an auditorium where approximately 30 international flags, a state flag, and the American flag were displayed. The international flags were displayed towards the rear of the stage and were hung from wires. The American and the state flags were actually on the stage on flag poles, Hence, the American flag was displayed lowered than the accompanying international flags. I remember being taught that when the American flag is displayed with international flags, it should be flown at at least the same height as the others. So, is the described situation improper flag etiquette or is there a rule that allows for it?
Should the american flag be removed from state capitals or banished from society? If an ignorant racist organization adopted our current American flag, would you want it removed from state capitals or banished from society, just because of that organization? That was done to the Confederate flag. The confederate flag was never intended to be a symbol of racism and its creators never intended it to be. Society, as a whole, takes what they hear and see at face value. It is important to look behind what is in front. Besides the majority of blacks just need something to gripe about. Lazy ducks as a whole with a very few exceptions, if any. LOL...
How do you fold a California State Flag correctly? My Girl Scout troop will be performing a flag ceremony at the local Regional Park we are going camping at. We know how to fold an American flag, but have never folded a California State flag before. Is it done the same way? What picture is on the outside if it is the same? Like the stars are on the outside of the American flag. Thanks!
Is it true about flags? I heard that if you fly a confederate flag in Michigan, that it has to be below the state and American flag or it is illegal. Is this true? I wasn't going to fly a conf. flag above our american or state flag but do I have to have all three up just to fly the conf. flag? Also I would like to add this is not a racial or a political statement it is just a flag I would like to fly pertaining to my redneck Lifestyle.
Should state flags fly above the federal flag? According to U.S. Historical Documents and the U.S. Constitution the states are sovereign. If that is the case then, except on federal property, I believe that the State flag should fly above the federal flag on flag poles. This is the way I display them at my home. As a military veteran I took an oath to support the constitution-and that includes the 10th amendment and so I fly the flag of my state ABOVE the american federal government's flag on my flagpole. If you think the answer is no-please elaborate as to WHY it shouldn't be done. and dont' just say "it's disrespectful" But elaborate how-I mean, I think it's disrespectful to put my state's flag beneath the federal one. I'm adding this after reading some of the answers: Are you aware that the U.S. Flag code allows for the Christian Flag to be flown above the U.S. Flag on U.S. Navy Vessels? Also, just because there are federal regs about something doesn't make it right. and finally it is NOT the "national" flag, it is the flag of the Federal level of Government and YES there is a BIG difference. And for those of you who think your country and your government are the same thing I guess I can see where you're coming from. my response to yahoo profile called "European". Yes, I know how federal regulations say to treat the Federal flag. I believe those federal regulations to be wrong and unconstitutional just like I believe that the gun-grabbing feds are wrong and unconstitutional and the abortion-funding feds are wrong and unconstitutional.
American Flags in NY at Half-Mast? The governor of NY has asked all State buildings to lower their American Flags to half-mast tomorrow for the victims of the Binghamton shooting. While I understand, the governor can request this for govt. buildings (NYS executive law Article 19) do private business etc. follow suit or does that require a directive from the president per the federal flag code?
American Flags at half-mast in New York? The governor of NY has asked all State buildings to lower their American Flags to half-mast tomorrow for the victims of the Binghamton shooting. While I understand, the governor can request this for govt. buildings (NYS executive law Article 19) do private business etc. follow suit or does that require a directive from the president per the federal flag code? Wineboy - It's about the Federal code -vs- State and understanding the whole thing. You can't (shouldn't) lower the flag for every reason - as harsh as it sounds. I agree they should be lowered - just wondered how the political thing worked. Then why can't the gov. just come out and ask people to do it?
What do I do with an American Flag that is Weathered/Faded? I purchased a house and the previous owner left their United States flag on the flag pole. The flag is starting to tear and fade due to the elements. I want to replace it with a new one and I want to show respect to this country by following the proper procedure to handle the weathered flag!
Illinois state flag in Wisconsin? I was riding through Waukesha, Wisconsin (or in the near vicinity) and saw a building with an Illinois state flag with an American flag. A few yards away was a Wisconsin state flag with an American flag. My question is: why would there be an Illinois state flag in Wisconsin (Illinois is my home state)? Have you ever seen something similar? People I know think my flag interest is weird.
Placement of three seperate flags? I have three flags I am wanting to hang at our repair shop. American Flag (which I know is gonna be on top) Marine Corps Flag State Flag. What would be the correct order in placement of the three.
Why are there always flags of foreign nations flying over Boston's City Hall Plaza? I've noticed this for at least the last five years. There are three flagpoles in City Hall Plaza in Boston. The U.S. flag and Massachusetts state flag are always displayed on the first two flagpoles, but every day the third flagpole changes, and it's always a different foreign country. So far I've seen the flags of Lithuania, Norway, and New Zealand. Yesterday for example, they had the flag of Haiti. It is technically legal for the city to do this (as long as the American flag is flown higher than the other flags). It's just a little odd, in my view, to fly the banners of foreign nations with no apparent significance or relevance.
What do the stars on the American flag symbolize? Now I know that the 50 stars on the American flag represent the 50 states, but why did the founding fathers choose stars? Why not dots, or squares, or something else like that? Why did they choose stars? Thanks for the help.
Do Repuglicons approve someone WRITING on the American Flag? Bush does it all the time.... Many pics on Internet of Bush signing american flags... Ummmm...isn't this a violation of TITLE 4 > CHAPTER 1 > § 8Prev | Next § 8. Where are American Flags used on Federal Government buildings, military installations ETC manufactured? Six weeks before Memorial Day and I see American Flags on display in local retail stores. I look closely at one of these Flags and I see It is made in China. This disgusts me but I realize the retailer has to stock his wares from the cheapest supplier. Where does the biggest consumer that ever existed in the history of the universe, the United States Government, get it's American Flags? I'm talking about every American Flag from the White House to the post office on Main Street, Smalltown, USA. Especially the American Flags that cover the coffins of our war dead coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan. These flags accompany the dead to their grave sites and are presented to the families with the thanks of a grateful nation. I surely hope these flags are American made out of cotton and fabric that was grown in American and not picked by some slave in a foreign land. If these Flags are made anywhere else but in America then we've got a REAL problem that we need to correct!
What exactly is a person expressing when they burn the American Flag? Just curious. What is one proving by burning the American Flag (if they are in the United States). I can kinda see other countries doing it to prove a point, but what about Americans burning their own flag. I know it is not illegal. All I know is when asked, the only answer I get is "Freedom of expression". Expression of what? All answers will be highly appreciated.
About American flags made in countries other than the U.S.? Hi there, as of today (July 4th), I've encountered a very interesting problem. In the United States, people are supposed to raise American flags made in the U.S. only. Let's say, if someone got caught raising an American flag "made in China", legally speaking, what will happen to this person ?
how do i properly display an american flag, when i intend to use a free standing flagpole? my mother is being fined by her home owners association because she put up an american flag without permission (yeah i know). her by laws state you need not ask permission if you display the american flag correctly. i think she has, but i need to find it in writing somewhere. a lot of sites give you info on proper display and flag etiqu. but do not specifically discuss displaying from flagpoles. thanks for the help.
Should it be illegal to own or fly the confederate flag in America? Some say it should be illegal to burn the American flag, because that amounts to a desecration. That is according to many Republican politicians. By that same logic, shouldn't the possession of a confederate flag be outlawed, since that ALSO amounts a desecration of the American flag? Our union is threatened by the burning of the American flag much as it is by the flying of the flag of our previous civil enemy. Isn't that hypocritical of proponents of a ban on American flag burning? Flying a confederate flag is not the same as flying the State flag of Louisiana, for example. That's because the confederate flag was supposed to apply to all of the states, not just the south. Plus, the Southern states now fly the American flag, "old glory".Flying the confederate flag is also not the same as flying a foreign flag, or the foreign flag of an enemy we fought in a war. That is because Americans were fighting other Americans. It is therefore an internal civil matter.
Which American State has the Union Jack as its flag? The design of the flag is credited to British sailor Alexander Adams who served the Hawaiin King when he was left behind by his ship. He was put in charge of the Hawaiin Navy and it was during this time the flag was designed. Of course the flag pre-dates the rest of the American States.
Am I the only person who is upset about protesters flying the Mexican flag above an up side down American flag This incident happened at Montebello High school in California. I contacted my state Senators and Congressmen and one sent a letter back saying that nothing could be done because these people were protected by their first Amendment rights. What happened to not flying another flag above the United States flag? Why is it not illlegal to fly the American flag upside down? Am I the only on upset about this? Am I making to much of this? What do you think? Thank you and have a nice day! P.S. Walter, I am a Catholic and most of the Hispanics are Catholic. I would not target them as I live in the South where we Catholics are targeted every day. As for the Confederate flag, I have written to Senators and Congressmen about that also. My Father was in WW2 and my brother retired from the Army as a Lt. Col. I find it offensive to disrespect the American flag no matter who does it.
Is it possible for out of state next of kin to get an American flag if they can't attend a military service? I've finally found out what is supposed to be done with my father's ashes and where they are to be interred. As his oldest daughter, I would like to have an American flag used at the service but am unable to attend. Who do I contact in order to have one sent to me? Also, is it possible to hold a service locally for my father without the ashes since they will have already been interred at the other location? Lavadog, I had to get sneaky just to get the information about what was to be done. The person in possession of my father's ashes refuses to acknowledge me as his next of kin even with a copy of my birth certificate as proof. smokehillfarm, the person being there will be my sister since she lives in the area where he died. As I said, she does not recognize me as his daughter at all. I was my father's firstborn from his first marriage. She was adopted by my father and his third wife. She has not allowed me to have any part in anything planned for my father. She's been despicable about the whole thing.
Should the first flag on the moon have been the American flag? Why not a world flag? The United States was the first and to date only country to put a man on the moon, there is no issue with that here. But surely it's a bigger feat that we put a PERSON on the moon rather than that it was an AMERICAN person. So what is it you're saying with this flag, you own the moon? Why not put up a flag that represents the entire human race and not just one part of it?
