American State Flags

Is it okay to fly my state flag over my American flag?

Like most early Americans after the revolution, I feel more allegiance to my state than my country. Is this wrong? Am I anti-American or just being a good Federalist as our framers intended?

  1. No you need to fly teh state flag under the stars and stripes...if you want you can just fly the state flag by itself...but i get your point.
  2. I believe Texas is one of the states that actually expects both flags to be flown at the same height.....I am sure there are others. I don't see any issue with it, but there will be those that do.
  3. To answer your question; No, not on the same flag pole. The American flag should always be the one on top. My advice would be to erect another flag pole, then you can fly both flags at the same level.
  4. As an individual you can fly your flags however you wish. As a government institution (local, state, Fed), you must follow rules... Or, you can be like McCain and simply give the flag to your enemy.
  5. No. The American flag is allways to be flown over any other flag ... However ... if your intent is to express indignity in the path that the country is taking, I would refer you to the US Flag Code Section 8 (a) which says - (a) The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property. Seems appropriate for the occaison does it not?
  6. Come on, don't do that. Right now, the country has problems, but don't take it out on the flag.
  7. The American Flag is supposed to be flown over the state flags with the exception of Texas bacause it was its own nation at a point in time before joining the union.
  8. I don't care if you do. I am not the most patriotic person ever, because i would be just as happy if I was born in New Zealand.
  9. I fly the California Republic state flag just below the American flag. I am proud of my home state but I still want old glory on top. The fact that you fly a state flag speaks volumes of your pride. Most people don't fly the American flag---let alone the STATE flag.
  10. No, your point is well taken, but still - No.
  11. So did the Confederates. In fact some still fly that flag...no law stops you from joining them.
  12. The Law states (which is national law ) That the American flag must be flown above all other flags in America, otherwise you will be asked to take it down, or you will be sent to jail. The funny thing is that at the same time the Government allows the burning of the flag as their right of symbolic speech, hey perhaps you should say that flying the state flag above the US flag is symbolic speech, go with whatever, my family has flew our state flag above the US flag for years until last year when we were told to take it down. Doing such isn't unamerican but shows that you care about your state.
  13. The national law states absolutely nothing about the flag outside the US Flag Code, which does not have the force of law. This means that government has no authority to prosecute anyone for violating the flag code, in any way. So just ignore the morons talking about jail time. As far as the official etiquette, no flag should be flown above the Stars and stripes on American soil. However, it is not official etiquette that state flags be flown lower, it is just common practice. So flying your State flag at the same height is perfectly within the etiquette. Ultimately, however, you can display your flags however you like, and if any ignorant busybodies tell you to take it down you can tell them to shove it.
  14. Flag etiquette: No other flag ever should be placed above American flag.
