Mississippi State Flags
![]() The current Mississippi state flag was adopted in 1894. It is unique in that it is the only state flag that includes the battle flag of the Confederacy from the American Civil War. This means that Mississippi and Hawaii's state flags are the only state flags that incorporate emblems of other countries into their designs. It is also the most controversial because of its inclusion of the Confederate flag. That symbol is so polarizing that, in 2001, an redesigned flag was suggested and put to a vote statewide. The old flag was preferred by 64 percent of the population, and the matter has not been brought up again since. |
