New Mexico State Flags
![]() According to a 2001 survey, the New Mexico state flag has the best design over all other North American flags, both United States state flags and Canadian province flags. The flag was not adopted until 1925, 14 years after New Mexico was admitted to the United States. It consists of the red sun symbol of the native Zia people on a yellow field. The colors both honor Isabella the I of Castille, as well as hearken back to the Cross of Burgundy flag that Spanish conquistadors used when exploring the region in her name. This gives the New Mexico flag a hidden connection to the Florida state flag, the design of which was also based on the Cross of Burgundy flag. |
