South Carolina State Flags
![]() South Carolina flags have changed little over the years. The original flag was designed in 1775 and used the blue of the soldiers' uniform as a background for a white-crescent emblem on the soldiers' caps. In 1861, a white palmetto tree was added to the design in honor of the defense of a palmetto log fort was attacked by the British fleet in 1776. The design is simple and clean-looking, unlike West Virginia flags and the flags of some other states that contain state seals and emblems that make the flags look busier. Some have also noted that the flag resembles Arab or Muslim flags because of the presence of the palm tree and the crescent moon. |
