The State Flag of Georgia

Georgia's state flag was changed several times throughout history. The current model displays three horizontal stripes and features the words "In God We Trust." This flag was flown since 2003, but before that there were two other flags which symbolized the state. The history and symbolism of the State Flag of Georgia is truly unique and interesting.

The first few flags

Georgia flew several different flags from 1776 until the 1950s. From 1956 until 2001, the State Flag of Georgia was based on the Confederate flag. The state flew this flag until 2001, when it was decided that it served as a painful reminder of slavery and required replacement by a more modern design.

The flag from 2001-2003

Georgia's second flag was adopted in January of 2001. It had a royal blue background and rectangular shape. In the center of the flag was a seal that read "State of Georgia, 1776". Underneath this seal, several previous versions of the United States' and Confederate flags were displayed in miniature. The words "In God We Trust" were displayed at the bottom.

Current flag

The current flag was adopted in 2003 and is very symbolic. The three stripes stand for the three branches of government, and the thirteen stars in the corner stand for the 13 original colonies, of which Georgia is one. The words "In God We Trust" are still found on the flag.

The current version of Georgia's flag flies above many government buildings. Many people collect old versions of the flag that represent a piece of Georgia's rich history as an original colony.
