The State Flag of Montana

In 1889, Montana became the 41st state of the Union. Expanding from the Missouri River to Canada and past the Continental Divide, this large state was formed by the efforts of pioneering settlers. Then and today, the state has a rich agricultural and mining oriented history that is depicted on its flag.

Symbolism of the Montana state flag

Montana's state flag depicts the state's natural beauty and riches that propelled the territory into statehood, and have continued to drive its economy and way of life. The flag is essentially the official state seal placed upon a deep blue background. The seal shows a view of the Rocky Mountains, the Great Falls and the mighty Missouri River. In the foreground, a shovel, pick and plow represent the mining and agricultural industries that have fueled Montana's economy for decades. Scribed in Spanish is the state's motto "Oro y Plata," meaning "gold and silver." Above the seal rests the name Montana in bold, golden lettering.

History of the Montana state flag

In the spring of 1898, the First Montana Infantry was preparing to deploy to Fort William Henry Harrison to fight the war against Spain. At this time, Montana was a state for nine years, and had not created an official flag. Colonel Kessler, the head of the First Infantry, felt that his regiment needed to represent their home state. He designed a flag and requested the ladies of Helena to sew it for his regiment to carry in its travels. Upon return to Montana, Colonel Kessler presented the tattered flag to the Governor for display. In 1905, that same design was adopted by the Montana Legislature as the official flag.

Built by pioneers, Montana has an economic history of mining and agriculture. The state flag highlights these industries, in addition to the state's own natural beauty. The flag has remained relatively unchanged for more than 100 years. The only changes occurred in 1981 to add more vibrant colors to the flag in an effort to distinguish it from others.
