United States Flag Etiquette

As a symbol of national pride, the United States flag deserves respect; so much so that Title 4 of the United States Code is devoted to proper flag etiquette. While this code is extensive, it is easy to show proper respect for the flag at your home by following a few simple guidelines.

Display etiquette

Displaying a flag properly is easy; simply follow these three rules: first, lower the flag at night, or if you do display it at night, light it well. Second, take the flag down during inclement weather to prevent damage unless it is specifically designed for harsh weather. Third, display the flag at half-staff on several special occasions, most importantly: until noon on Memorial Day, Patriots Day, Peace Officers Memorial Day, and at the direction of the president or state governor. In addition to these rules, the flag code specifically prohibits using the flag for advertising or any design purposes, such as for curtains, napkins or clothing; however, this last rule does not include replicas of the flag, such as a flag pin.

Proper handling and disposal

Always handle the flag with care and respect, and keep it secure and clean. Contrary to the popular belief, it is not necessary to destroy a flag that has come into contact with the ground. Instead, correct the situation immediately, clean the flag if necessary, and secure the flag so this does not happen again. Even with proper care, at some point every flag starts to wear, and it is necessary to dispose of it. The flag code advises that when a flag is retired, that it is destroyed in a dignified manner, preferably by burning.

While these guidelines are not comprehensive (consult Title 4 of the United States Code for a complete list of regulations), by following the above guidelines you can avoid most major breaches of flag etiquette. If in doubt, just remember, always handle the flag with the respect and dignity that it deserves.
